Wykład: India and Its Indigenous People: Religious Revitalisation Movements in 20th century Jharkhand, 13 XII 2017

Instytut Religioznawstwa UJ zaprasza na wykład prof. Sanjukty Das Gupty (Uniwersytet La Sapienza w Rzymie) pt.: India and Its Indigenous People: Religious Revitalisation Movements in 20th century Jharkhand. Wykład odbędzie się w środę, 13 grudnia 2017, o godzinie 15:30, w Instytucie Religioznawstwa, przy ul. Grodzkiej 52, w sali 9.

In my lecture, I will focus upon the changes in the religious practices of the 'tribal' people or
adivasis of the Indian state of Jharkhand in the 20th century, during the colonial period and after.
Ever since their intrusion into Chotonagpur (which today form part of Jharkhand), British
administrators, missionaries and anthropologists conducted ethnographic studies on the socioeconomic
and cultural life of the indigenous people of the region who were classified as 'tribes'.
Together with knowledge-gathering, there were attempts to relate this knowledge according to
certain identifiable structures. From their writings we get a picture of the social organisations
of the different 'tribal' groups as being based on communal solidarity and firmly anchored in
magico-religious beliefs.
