Syllabus
The course is dedicated to the issue of methodology of studies of mystical experience. The course will provide an introduction to the main contemporary (perennialist and constructivist) approaches toward mystical experience. Various (Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic, Christian) mystical traditions will be examined with the accent put on the perennialist methodological approach.

1.Some preliminary definitions
  • Empirical experience, alternative experience, mystical experience, religious experience, numinous and meditative experience,
  • a concise history of investigation of religious experience (W. James, W. Otto, W.T. Stace, R.C. Zaehner,)

2.Constructivism vs. Perennialism
  • S. Katz’s concept of ever-constructed character of religious experience and R.K.C. Forman’s argumentation for perennial approach towards religious experience. (The analysis of S. Katz’s “Language, Epistemology and Mysticism In Mysticism and Philosophical Analysis” and R.K.C. Forman’s (Mysticism, Constructivism, and Forgetting In R.K.C. Forman (ed.): The Problem of Pure Consciousness)...

3.Pure Consciousness Event – an exemplary religious experience?
  • Philosophical and philosophical problems of the concept of “objectless” mind.
  • Empirical evidences for PCE in various religious traditions
  • Neurophysiologic argumentation for PCE
4.Neuropsychology and phenomenology of experience: is there any meet?
  • the problem of “rhetoric of experience”
  • R. Fischer’s “map” of alternative states of consciousness
  • Unitive experience: the views of Neuropsychology and Neurophysiology



RITUAL STUDIES

1. Etymology of “ritual”, related concepts (rite, ceremony, cult, ordered recurring forms of behaviour)
2. History of concept: From “myth” to “ritual” (Fontenelle, Heyne, Karl Otfried Müller, Fr. Max Müller, Tylor, Robertson Smith, Frazer to Myth & Ritual School [Hooke & Harrison]
3. Theories of Ritual:
  • Early sociology of Religon: Fustel de Coulanges, Durkheim, Mauss & Hubert
  • Functionalists: Radcliif-Brown & Malinowski
  • Neo-Functionalists: Roy Rappaport & Marvin Harris
  • Symbolic Anthropology: Victor Turner, Mary Douglas, Clifford Geertz
  • The "Meaninglessness of Ritual" Fritz Staal, Caroline Humphrey, Hubert Laidlaw
  • Ritual Knowledge: Theodore Jennings, Axel Michaels
  • Etological, psychological & biological explanations (to be touched upon, mostly Walter Burkert),
4. Types of Rrituals: out of the many typologies I discuss the ones brought forth by Catherine Bell and Ronald Grimes
