Syllabus
The course is dedicated to the issue of methodology of studies of mystical experience. The course will provide an introduction to the main contemporary (perennialist and constructivist) approaches toward mystical experience. Various (Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic, Christian) mystical traditions will be examined with the accent put on the perennialist methodological approach.
1.Some preliminary definitions
- Empirical experience, alternative experience, mystical experience, religious experience, numinous and meditative experience,
- a concise history of investigation of religious experience (W. James, W. Otto, W.T. Stace, R.C. Zaehner,)
2.Constructivism vs. Perennialism
- S. Katz’s concept of ever-constructed character of religious experience and R.K.C. Forman’s argumentation for perennial approach towards religious experience. (The analysis of S. 3.Pure Consciousness Event – an exemplary religious experience?
