Dr. Michael Torsten Wieser-Much Department of South-Asian, Tibetan and Buddhist Studies Vienna University A Series of Lectures on Buddhist Philosophy (2 ETCS) 5-9 November, 2007 The course attempts to present some of the main topics treated in Buddhist philosophy. After considering the role of philosophical thinking in the context of the Buddhist tradition in general, in taking the core teaching of the Buddha, especially the Four Noble Truths, as its starting-point, the lecture will look at the way various questions were dealt with in the Hinayana and the Mahayana, questions as: transitoriness and momentariness, the problem of the self, anti-substantialism and illusionism, cosmography, rebirth and the external world. In conclusion also the contribution of the epistemological school of Buddhism will be considered. Exam: Written test after the last lecture.
